This works aim to convey the notion of a perfect pastoral fantasy that is relayed on packaging such as butter, meat, and canned vegetables; objects that people have access to everyday. Packaging contains images of fields of wheat, smiling farmers, red barns, and happy cows. Through the creation of clay seed packets/burlap bags, I aim to push the viewer to look at the objects with a different viewpoint. The clay bags are enlarged in clay and have become durable and solid.
Through text and image, I play on the pastoral fantasy by juxtaposing the text of the seed variety name, such as ‘Big Boy’ or ‘Tendersweet’ with the image of a blue ribbon tomato or corn cob. Your vegetables and fruits may never achieve the perfection of the picture on the sleeve of the seed packet; the joy is striving for it. But why do we obsess over this pastoral fantasy?
